So, my guess is that the 모르지 doesn't make much sense grammatically, but it fits the uncertainty mood that the ~지 ending implies. I wonder if it might even be "How should I know?" instead of just "I don't know." This is just a wild guess, but I think the ~고 at the end isn't really a grammar point.
