WebJul 20, 2000 · Batavia, Illinois — An international collaboration of scientists at the Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory will announce on July 21, 2000, the first direct evidence for the subatomic particle called the tau neutrino, the third kind of neutrino known to particle physicists. WebTau particles are denoted by the symbol τ− and the antitaus by τ+ . Tau leptons have a lifetime of 2.9 × 10−13 s and a mass of 1 776.86 MeV/c2 (compared to 105.66 MeV/c2 for muons and 0.511 MeV/c2 for electrons). Since their interactions are very similar to those of the electron, a tau can be thought of as a much heavier version of the electron.
